The New York Liberty is about to hit the blockbuster market.
The franchise is reportedly adding 2021 WNBA MVP and four-time All-Star Jonquel Jones. who specifically requested a move to the Liberty, via a three-team deal. Jones led the Connecticut Sun to a WNBA Finals appearance last season, losing to the Las Vegas Aces in four games. Winsidr’s Rachel Galligan reported first the potential trade in the 6-foot-6 tall on Sunday.
The trade includes Liberty-adding combo forward Kayla Thornton from the Dallas Wings, where she has been a starter since 2018, after Howard Megdal by The Next Hoops. The Liberty will reportedly send No. 6 overall and shooting guard Rebecca Allen to the sun. Natasha Howard, a 2022 Liberty All-Star, and launch point guard Crystal Dangerfield will both travel to Dallas as part of the deal.
The move gives the Liberty huge star talent ahead of the April draft. Jones, who just turned 29 earlier this month, has averaged 15.0 points and 9.3 rebounds for five years while shooting 51 percent from the field and 38 percent from the 3-point ranger since going first in 2017 Once named an All-Star, Stretch does not include the truncated 2020 season as Jones opted out.
WNBA free agency begins Jan. 21, with official signings beginning Feb. 1. This off-season.
The Liberty has been linked with another former league MVP and New York-born Breanna Stewart, who will meet the free hand. The two teams reportedly met prior to the 2022 season. Stewart was a four-time All-Star and two-time WNBA champion with the Seattle Storm.
The Liberty were eliminated by Chicago Sky in the first round of last year’s playoffs, their second straight postseason trip after a three-year absence from 2018-2020.
